- The City of Portland is currently hiring multiple Asphalt Rakers within the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT)

Job Appointment: Full time
Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday 10-hour shifts

The incumbent is an essential employee and a member of the bureau's 24-hour response team and may require after-hour, evening, weekend, and holiday emergency response.**Please note, there is a work skill demonstration test for this recruitment. Position Summary
Asphalt Rakers perform needed repairs on City maintained streets and are responsible for also operating the screed control on the paving machine.
What you'll get to do:- Set up jobs with proper traffic safety control devices
- Dump asphalt; rake to grade
- Compact hot mix using a vibraplate
- Complete activity reports for each job as it is finished
- Assist and work with Crew Lead to determine mix needed to complete job and orders from vendor.
- Determine proper screed adjustment on spreader when paving streets
- Prepare and pave potholes, utility cuts, overlays, base repair, and cold milling projects
- Spread tack coat
- Utilize strong communication techniques to answer questions from the public

Wage Information:
Entry: $32.13 per hour
After six months: $33.34 per hour
After 1 year: $37.30 per hour
After 2 years: $38.66 per hour

To Qualify
- The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
- Experience utilizing asphalt raking tools and equipment.
- Experience raking hot mix.
- Ability to accurately judge the amount of hot mix needed for a project and rake to required grade prior to rolling or compacting.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical computations to determine area and volume.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for long periods of time.
Applicants must also:- Possess a valid state driver's license and acceptable driving record at the time of hire.

- Submit a "complete" five-year court-certified Driver's Abstract of Driving Record (obtained at applicant's expense) upon offer
- Take and pass a Pre-Placement medical exam upon offer

Please note: Work in this class is typically performed in a field environment. Incumbent is typically required to negotiate rough terrain; lift heavy objects; work outdoors in all weather conditions; may be called back to work during emergencies; work in and around traffic, work site equipment or machinery; work at heights or in confined spaces; exposed to hazardous materials; wear protective gear. STEP 2: Minimum Qualification Evaluation Phase 1: week of September 14, 2026
- An evaluation of each applicant's training and paid and unpaid experience, as demonstrated in their work history and supplemental questions.
- Your work history and responses to the supplemental questions will be the basis for our pass/fail evaluation of your qualifications for participation in the next step. Incomplete or inappropriate information may result in disqualification.

STEP 3: Minimum Qualification Evaluation Phase 2: Work Skills Demonstration
- Applicants who successfully pass Minimum Qualification Evaluation Phase 1 of the recruitment process will be scheduled to participate in the work skills demonstration, weighted 100%. The work skills demonstration test will cover the following:
Asphalt raking AS WELL AS operating the screed control on a paving machine- An invitation will be sent via email. Out-of-town candidates will be required to travel to participate in phase II.
- Phase II is tentatively scheduled for week of October 5, 2026
- A photo ID will be required for admittance to the test.
- All Health and Safety protocols must be followed.
- You have 14 days from the notice of the minimum qualification evaluation phase 2 results to let us know if you would like to review and discuss your evaluation result. Please read the City of Portland Administrative Rule 3.01 for complete information.
- Additional evaluation may be required prior to establishment of the eligible list and/or final selection.
STEP 4: Establishment of Eligible List: week of October 12, 2026
- Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on the equally ranked eligible list.
