Torus is a pioneering, sustainable energy solutions company based in Utah, dedicated to revolutionizing renewable energy storage and management. Our mission is to empower communities to become their own sustainable energy providers.
We are driven by a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability and community. We tackle critical challenges facing the American energy landscape. Our advanced Torus Spin Flywheel™ technology charges and discharges electricity 16 times faster than traditional batteries, ensuring rapid response to grid demands and enhancing energy efficiency.
Our advanced manufacturing, research, and development facilities in South Salt Lake and Springville, Utah drive continuous innovation, and our commitment to American manufacturing ensures quality and reliability. Join us at Torus and be part of an exciting team that is transforming the energy landscape.

About the Role

The Overwatch Director of Engineering leads the engineering disciplines responsible for the health, stability, and technical response of Torus systems in the field. You will guide a cross-functional engineering team that understands how our systems behave, why they behave that way, and what must be done when they don’t. From telemetry quality and performance behaviors to root-cause analysis and reliability improvements, you create the frameworks and technical judgment that enable Overwatch to operate intelligently at scale.

Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership
  • Lead, develop, and coach the Overwatch Engineering team (Electrical Engineering, Firmware liaison, Reliability, Data interpretation)
  • Set engineering direction for how we detect, diagnose, and resolve system issues
  • Own technical correctness: what “normal,” “abnormal,” and “expected” look like across BESS, FESS, and hybrid systems
  • Create and maintain engineering standards and triage protocols used by Overwatch
  • Ensure engineering investigations are thorough, consistent, and timely
Technical Triage & Root Cause
  • Lead escalated technical investigations when systems deviate from expected behavior
  • Build frameworks for identifying patterns, diagnosing root cause, and defining corrective actions
  • Partner closely with Hardware, Firmware, and Data teams when triage requires deeper subsystem expertise
  • Ensure findings are translated into clear action for product, engineering, and field orgs
Reliability & Telemetry Quality
  • Improve signal vs noise by reducing false alarms, clarifying thresholds, and enhancing telemetry accuracy
  • Own the engineering side of system performance behaviors (capacity swings, charge/discharge patterns, thermal behavior, inverter behavior)
  • Identify recurring reliability themes and partner with product and hardware teams to close them
  • Improve the clarity and quality of data available to Overwatch
Cross-Functional Partnership
  • Provide engineering guidance to the Head of Overwatch and TOC teams, without owning operations
  • Collaborate with Product, Hardware, Firmware, and Field Ops to ensure engineering-level issues is understood and addressed
  • Represent engineering perspective in release readiness reviews, technical safety discussions, and system architecture sessions

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree; preferably in Network Security/ Engineering/ Administration, Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a related field. Work experience may be evaluated in place of education.
  • 8–12+ years in systems, electrical, embedded, reliability, or controls engineering
  • Experience leading engineering teams responsible for technical triage or high-availability systems
  • Strong understanding of telemetry, controls, and system diagnostics
  • Proven ability to synthesize complex technical signals into clear, structured findings
  • Track record of working closely with hardware + firmware teams in fast-moving environments
  • Excellent communication skills. Clear, concise, and able to explain system behavior to non-engineering teams

Preferred Experience

  • BESS, FESS, or energy systems background
  • Experience with observability/monitoring platforms or control systems
  • Experience scaling systems from early-stage to commercial fleets
  • Familiarity with NOC/TOC/SOC engineering support models
  • Experience driving failure investigations and long-term corrective actions

Who You Are

You’re an engineering leader who loves understanding how systems behave and why. You bring clarity, structure, and calm to complexity, and you’re energized by solving problems that blend hardware, firmware, and real-world operating conditions. You care deeply about reliable performance, tight triage loops, and engineering excellence. You build teams that communicate clearly, seek context, and partner well across disciplines. Most importantly, you know how to create the technical foundation that allows Overwatch to operate confidently at scale.
