About the Role
At Torus, we "Value Speed and Quality Equally." As a Technical Product Manager, you will be instrumental in helping us consistently achieve that balance. You'll operate at the intersection of customer value and technical feasibility, partnering with engineering teams to translate complex customer needs into product solutions that span hardware, power electronics, firmware, data, and software.
We operate within a continuous discovery and continuous delivery framework, named Directed Discovery. This means you’ll need to fully leverage your skillset to identify key opportunities and then partner with engineering teams across hardware, power electronics, firmware, data, and software to break down that value into small, continuously deliverable pieces. Your technical skillset and ability to evaluate trade-offs across layers of our technology is how we will build systems that create value immediately and create reliability and scalability over time.
Who You Are
- Insatiably curious: you dive head first into learning something new when it drives better decision making or unlocks a solution to a problem.
- Technically credible but customer-obsessed: you have enough technical depth to earn trust with engineering teams, but you never lose sight of the customer problems you're solving. You can read system diagrams, understand data pipelines, and follow firmware and software tradeoff conversations even if you're not writing the code yourself.
- Comfortable with ambiguity: you drive decisions even when information is incomplete. You move seamlessly between strategy and execution, always staying aligned to Torus' mission.
- Think in systems: you anticipate how decisions ripple through a product. You're decisive with incomplete information, collaborative and influential without authority, and pragmatic about what complexity is worth taking on.
- Strong written and verbal communicator: you explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Responsibilities
- Keep engineering teams aligned on the "why" behind what they're building, so they can make good implementation decisions autonomously.
- Validate technical feasibility of product concepts early, working with engineering to identify risks and opportunities before significant resources are committed.
- Drive continuous delivery by partnering with Engineering leaders to continuously manage their Kanban boards with a major emphasis on iterative development.
- Create cross-functional alignment and prioritization for experiences and features requiring coordination across hardware, power electronics, firmware, data, and software teams.
- Make informed tradeoff decisions by understanding how system components interact—from power electronics to cloud infrastructure—and the implications of technical choices on customer experience, timeline, and cost.
- Drive requirement clarity by asking the hard questions upfront that prevent downstream confusion and rework across engineering teams.
- Own product documentation including product requirement documents, experience briefs, success metrics, and go-to-market requirements for system-level capabilities.
- Identify opportunities where technical improvements can unlock multiple customer value propositions, and advocate for strategic technical investment.
- Other duties and projects as assigned.
Required Experience
- 5+ years of experience in technical product management or product-adjacent roles (systems engineering, solutions architecture, technical program management) with increasing product ownership.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field (or equivalent experience).A track record of defining requirements that balance customer value, technical feasibility, and business constraints.
- Demonstrated ability to drive continuous delivery by managing work in progress.
- Experience working with hardware-software integrated products or complex systems with multiple technical disciplines.
- Familiarity with modern development practices including CI/CD, automated testing, and cloud-based architectures.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with grid-interactive systems such as energy storage, solar inverters, EV chargers, or similar products that interface with utility grids.
- Knowledge of power system standards (UL 1741, IEEE 1547, Rule 21) and grid interconnection requirements.
- Familiarity with energy management systems, demand response programs, or virtual power plant operations.
- Experience with IoT-scale data systems and real-time control systems.
- Background in power electronics, embedded systems, or energy technology.
