Where does this role fit in?
The Junior Accountant role sits within our dynamic Finance department, reporting into our Team Leader, Financial Reporting. This isn't just a reconciliation job; you'll be a critical link in our financial ecosystem, stepping up from basic bookkeeping to own more complex reconciliations, drive key month-end close tasks, and initiate analytical processes—all under moderate guidance. Your day-to-day will focus on independently managing recurring accounting activities and meticulously reviewing expense data across our various systems. By mastering how our financial systems connect, you'll be instrumental in guaranteeing the accuracy and integrity of the data that powers our management reporting and strategic decision-making.
This role serves as a foundational step toward the Accountant position, with growth expected in financial analysis, systems expertise, and ownership of broader month-end and reporting responsibilities.
What will you do?
- Lead Core Month-End Activities: Prepare and post standard journal entries (including accruals and prepayments) and support the timely month-end closing process.
- Manage Complex Reconciliations: Perform detailed reconciliations, focusing on inter-entity balances and key general ledger accounts beyond basic cash and bank activity.
- Ensure Expense Compliance: Meticulously review and verify employee and vendor expense submissions across platforms (e.g., Brex, Airwallex), ensuring compliance with company policies and correct cost coding.
- Master Expense System Integrity: Reconcile card transactions and reimbursements between all expense and accounting platforms (Brex, Airwallex, Xero) to ensure accurate posting to the general ledger.
- Monitor Allowances and Spend: Assist in tracking and monitoring specific employee allowances (e.g., WFH, lifestyle subsidies) as part of the regular expense review process.
- Drive Problem-Solving: Identify and determine corrective actions for routine discrepancies, escalating unusual variances or system issues with clear documentation.
- Support Process Improvement: Actively suggest and implement enhancements to expense workflows and reconciliation processes to boost efficiency and automation.
- Utilise Finance Technology: Apply and leverage AI-powered tools and automation features within financial platforms to improve reconciliation efficiency and data validation.
- Analyse Financial Data: Begin interpreting data trends and irregularities to provide summary reports of expense activity, highlighting key anomalies for senior review.
- Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Coordinate with teams like HR and Operations to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of necessary financial information.
- Maintain Audit Readiness: Prepare accurate, well-documented workpapers and supporting schedules that fully satisfy management and future audit requirements.
- Uphold Control Standards: Ensure that all assigned tasks and schedules are completed accurately and on time, strictly adhering to internal controls and documentation standards.
What will you bring?
- Financial Acumen: A solid understanding of bookkeeping and basic accounting principles, including how journal entries directly impact financial statements.
- System Proficiency: Proven experience utilising and navigating key accounting and expense management systems (e.g., Xero, Brex, Airwallex).
- Data Analysis: Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets for efficient data validation and analytical tasks.
- Work Experience: 2–3 years of accounting or bookkeeping experience preferred (or equivalent internship exposure).
- Problem-Solving: The ability to proactively investigate discrepancies and recommend effective, data-backed solutions.
- Accountability: A strong sense of ownership over assigned work, consistently ensuring accuracy and meeting critical deadlines.
- Adaptability: The capacity to quickly adjust to new systems, processes, and automation tools as the business evolves.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written skills for providing clear updates and concise explanations of financial variances.
- Collaboration: A history of working effectively and positively with team members and cross-functional departments.
What's in it for you?
- Monthly Lifestyle subsidy: Our employees use this for financial, physical, and mental well-being
- WFH set-up allowance: To ensure you have the right environment to work in, we will help you get set up within your first 3 months at UpGuard
